Wade Groenewegen van der Weiden took over as Head Coach of Kings Soccer program in January of 2016, when he started recruiting players for the coming season. Groenewegen has a strong history with RDC, as he was a Kings Soccer player from 1995-1997 and during the 1999 season, and he was also head coach from 1998 to 2002 and assistant coach 2003. He looks forward to the coming season, with a deep talent pool of young players that will lay the foundation to make the Kings a contender in the competitive ACAC.
Groenewegen received his Bachelor of Education degree at RDC, through the Middle Years collaborative program with the University of Alberta. Since then, he has been a teacher in the Red Deer Catholic School Division, spending 10 years at St. Patrick’s School and moving to Notre Dame this year. He has coached all levels of soccer – from beginner to competitive – in central Alberta for over 20 years. Groenewegen has been a coach with the Red Deer Renegades since the program began and has served as a past technical director in central Alberta. He has also been an Alberta Soccer Association staff coach.
