This week, the Red Deer College Kings Volleyball team will host the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Volleyball National Championship at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from March 7 to 9. The Hockey Kings will open the quarter-final against the Concordia University Thunder.

Here is a summary of what is happening this week in RDC Athletics.

  

Kings Volleyball | March 7-9 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The top eight men's volleyball teams from the CCAA will meet in Red Deer and compete for national gold.

The Red Deer College Kings will play the Limoilou Titans, on Thursday, March 7 at 6:00 p.m. in their first match at nationals.  

Regan Fathers, will be a key player for the Kings. The right side hitter and Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men's Volleyball Player of the Year brings a wealth of skill and leadership, having won two previous national championships.

Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha anticipates a good match against the Titans. "Limoilou has been in the last four CCAA National Championship matches, so no doubt they will be confident and they are very well-coached," he said. "They always play with a lot of energy and compete hard, so I would expect nothing less than their best."

The RDC Kings (18-6) placed second in the competitive ACAC South Division, and were one of the hottest teams to complete the regular season, winning 15 of their past 17 conference matches.

Limoilou, led by Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) Player of the Year Nicolas Fortin, finished first in the standings with a 12-4 record. The Limoilou Titans earned their fifth consecutive RSEQ gold medal after winning in straight sets over the Griffons de l'Outaouais in the final.

Kings Hockey | Friday, March 8 | 7:00 p.m. | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Kings (19-7-1-1) will enter the best of three quarter-final against the Concordia University Thunder (7-19-1-1) with momentum, having won six consecutive games. 

During conference play, the third place Red Deer College Kings went undefeated against the sixth place Concordia University Thunder, winning three games (6-4, 4-1 and 4-1) and tying one (3-3). Over the four games, Chase Thudium had eight points (two goals and six assists).

The Thunder have been competitive in most games and defeated the first place NAIT Ooks 3-2 on February 2.

In the other quarter-final, the fourth place University of Alberta Augustana Vikings (17-10-1-0) will host the fifth place SAIT Trojans (17-10-1-0) on Thursday, March 7 at 6:00 p.m. NAIT and MacEwan University will receive a bye.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, March 9 | 8:15 p.m. | Concordia University

The Concordia University Thunder will host the Kings in game two.

If necessary, the RDC Kings and Concordia Thunder will battle in Red Deer.
