The Running Room Grand Prix #2 wrapped up in Calgary on Saturday and the RDC Indoor Track team had another strong performance. The Queens and Kings teams both finished in second spot overall.
"It was an awesome day. Both the women's and men's teams finished first in the 4 x 400 metre relay. Devon Gurney ran to a personal best in the 1,000 metre finals by about 10 seconds," said Steph Flieler, RDC coach in Calgary. "Jill Stewart had a busy day competing in the 3,000 metre, 1,000 metre and 4 x 400 metre relay, and she ran very well. Jordanna Cota had a strong 1,000 metre race and relay, and Sadie Borgfjord achieved a personal best over 300 metres."
Sadie Borgfjord, Shaelyn Moltzahn, Jordanna Cota and Jill Stewart completed the 4 x 400 m relay in 4:30.88 and defeated second place Lethbridge College by nearly 8 seconds (4:38.78). Lucas Wessner, Adam Wass, Caleb Heinrichs and Devon Gurney finished the 4 x 400 m relay in 3:48.08 to seal top spot, less than half a second ahead of Lethbridge College (3:48.51).
Jill Stewart finished third (11:25.21) in the women's 3,000 m finals. Jordanna Cota was the top Queens runner in the women's 1,000 m finals. The fifth-year student-athlete from Red Deer placed third (3:13.84). Sadie Borgfjord took top spot (44.08) in the women's 300 m finals.
Adam Wass completed the 3,000 m finals in fifth spot (10:14.58). Devon Gurney had another great day on the track. In the men's 1,000 m finals, the Kinesiology and Sport Studies student finished second (2:45.15) less than a second behind Jacques Saayman of the Trojans (2:44.91). In the men's 300 m finals, Lucas Wessner placed second (39.26).
The Queens and Kings will now prepare for the upcoming championships. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Indoor Track Championships will take place March 9 and 10. MacEwan University will host the event.
